Replacing Oakley Holbrook lenses at home is one of the easiest jobs in eyewear, because the Holbrook’s O-Matter frame was designed to flex. No heat, no tools, no risk — just a controlled push from behind and a satisfying snap when the new lens seats. This step-by-step guide covers the OO9102 Holbrook in detail, then explains what changes for the Frogskins and the Gascan.
Why the Holbrook is the easiest swap you’ll do
O-Matter is an injection-moulded nylon composite that bends under pressure and springs straight back — it is built to be flexed, so working a lens in and out does not stress the frame the way it would with rigid acetate. Each lens is held by a groove running around the inside of the rim, with small notches that lock it in position. Understand those two things — the frame flexes, the notches align — and the whole job takes five minutes. What you’ll need
- Your new compatible lenses, left and right identified
- A clean microfiber cloth
- A flat work surface with good light
- Clean, dry hands — that’s genuinely the full list
Removing the old lenses
- Lay the cloth down and hold the frame face-down above it, gripping the frame at the nose bridge.
- Place your thumb behind the lens at its top inner corner, nearest the bridge, with your fingers bracing the frame front around the rim — not on the lens face.
- Push forward, slowly and steadily. The frame will flex, the lens will lever out of its groove, and it will pop free front-first onto the cloth.
- If it resists, walk your thumb along the top edge from behind and push again. Never press the centre of the lens — pressure belongs at the edge, where the lens is strongest.
- Repeat for the second lens.
Installing the new lenses: notch alignment is everything
- Identify the orientation. Check left versus right, then find the small notches or tabs along the lens edge — they correspond to seats inside the frame groove. Handle the lens by its edges only.
- Seat the top edge first. Slide the upper edge of the lens under the brow bar, lining the notch up with its slot before you apply any pressure.
- Press the nose-side corner in. A firm push with your thumb and it will click past the lip of the groove.
- Work around the lower rim. Press along the bottom edge with your thumb, letting the frame flex; you will feel a series of soft clicks as the lens drops in.
- Finish at the outer corner. If it will not seat, flex the frame slightly outward rather than forcing the lens — let the O-Matter do the work.
- Verify the seat line. Check the lens sits flush the whole way round, give the frame a gentle flex, and wipe everything down with the cloth.
Frogskins and Gascan: what changes
Frogskins (OO9013)
The Frogskins frame is lighter and even more flexible than the Holbrook, with smaller lenses that release suddenly. Use noticeably less force and keep the frame close to the cloth, or the lens will ping across the room. Alignment works exactly the same way: notch first, then press around the rim.
Gascan (OO9014)
The Gascan is the opposite case: a stiffer frame holding high-wrap, strongly curved lenses. Removal takes more initial pressure — push from behind at the point nearest the nose and be patient. When installing, seat the top edge first and roll the curve of the lens into the groove, following the wrap instead of fighting it. It feels tighter than the Holbrook; that is normal.
Mistakes to avoid
- Prying with tools. Screwdrivers and knives scratch lens coatings and gouge the groove. Thumbs only.
- Pressing the middle of the lens. Edge pressure pops lenses; centre pressure cracks them.
- Forcing before the notch is aligned. You will grind the lens edge and it still won’t seat. Align first, press second.
- Being afraid of the flex. O-Matter bending is not damage — it is the design doing its job.
