What glare is — and how a polarized lens kills it
Sunlight travels as waves vibrating in every direction. When those waves bounce off a flat, shiny, horizontal surface — wet asphalt, open water, a car bonnet, packed snow — the reflected light comes away vibrating mostly horizontally. That organised horizontal light is glare: the harsh white sheet that hides the road surface and makes you squint. A polarized lens contains a filter that works like a microscopic venetian blind with vertical slats: vertically vibrating light passes through, horizontally vibrating glare is blocked. The result is not just a darker view but a cleaner one — surfaces regain texture, colours deepen, and your eyes stop fighting. A non-polarized lens, by contrast, simply dims everything evenly, glare included but never removed.
A ten-second test: not sure whether the lenses you already own are polarized? Look at your phone screen through one lens and slowly rotate the glasses ninety degrees. If the screen dims dramatically or blacks out at some angle, the lens is polarized; if the brightness never changes, it is not.
When polarized wins
- Driving. Glare off wet roads, the bonnet and the glass of other cars is exactly the horizontal light polarization removes. Long motorway days end with noticeably fresher eyes.
- Fishing and watersports. Cut the surface reflection and you can see into the water — structure, weed beds, sometimes the fish themselves. For anglers this is the closest thing to a superpower a lens can offer.
- Snow and open sun. Bright flat light bouncing off snow, sand or pale stone becomes dramatically more comfortable.
- All-day wear outdoors. Less squinting means less fatigue; many people only notice how hard their eyes were working after they switch.
When non-polarized is the smarter choice
- Screens. Phone displays, petrol-pump screens, ATMs and some car instrument clusters emit or reflect polarized light themselves. Viewed through a polarized lens at the wrong angle they can dim, show rainbow patterns or black out entirely. If your day involves constantly reading a screen through your sunglasses, non-polarized is the practical pick.
- Flying and some motorsport. Pilots have traditionally avoided polarized lenses because cockpit instruments and laminated windscreens interact with the filter. Riders with digital dashes should check theirs before committing.
- Winter sports where you read the ice. Polarization can mute the tell-tale shine of an icy patch on a ski run — some skiers deliberately choose non-polarized for exactly that reason.
- Budget. Non-polarized lenses cost less, and for everyday city wear they are all most people need.
Mirror coatings and tints are separate decisions
A mirror coating is a reflective layer on the outside of the lens that bounces extra light away before it enters — it cuts overall brightness, hides your eyes and looks sharp, and it is available on both polarized and non-polarized lenses. UV400 has nothing to do with polarization
This is the most misunderstood point in sunglasses, so let’s be direct: UV protection comes from the lens material absorbing ultraviolet wavelengths up to 400 nanometres. It is not created by the polarizing filter, and a lens does not need to be polarized to protect you. A dark lens without UV filtering is actually worse than no sunglasses at all, because it relaxes your pupils wider while letting UV straight in.
